Gebrüder Weiss: Starting signal for EUR 20 million investment in Wels

Gebrüder Weiss to relocate its forwarding branch from Linz to Wels in Q1/2014; location in Upper Austria’s capital to remain as logistics terminal

On 2 April the transport and logistics enterprise Gebrüder Weiss has launched a comprehensive program to reorganise its forwarding and logistics activities in Upper Austria. At its branch in Wels the group is adding a highly modern 9,300 m² logistics warehouse and an office building of around 3,800 m² to the existing facilities – a 18,000 m² warehouse and 1,200 m² office area. The forwarding terminal is expected to be put into operation in the first quarter of 2014. It will meet the highest technical, safety and environmental requirements. As the company reports, a total of around EUR 20 million is invested in the expansion.

With the completion of this construction project, Gebrüder Weiss is centralising a majority of its activities in Upper Austria to one single location, thus creating synergies regarding space and processes. While the previous Upper Austrian forwarding location and about 200 employees move from Linz to Wels, the building in Prinz-Eugen-Straße, Linz will continue to exist as a logistics centre. “The new facilities allow us to continue to offer our customers the best conditions and enough capacities in Upper Austria,” says Reinhard Grasser, Regional Director at Gebrüder Weiss. “Additionally, customers benefit from the pooling of logistic resources at one site,” Grasser continues.

The GW-site in Wels offers a direct connection to the highway and is also close to the Linz-Hörsching airport. Moreover, the logistics terminal has a direct rail connection to the western railway section of the Austrian railways ÖBB. This allows for sustainable and efficient multimodal transports. The site in Wels, with a total area of 126,000 m², was also selected because there is sufficient additional space available for possible expansions in the coming years. After completion of the just launched investment about 300 persons will be working for GW in Wels.
