Further optimisation measures with SBB Cargo

SBB Cargo starts numerous initiatives to guarantee cost-effective production

SBB has fixed the strategic impact direction for the development of its cargo division. The international block train services in Alps-crossing transit traffic will be outsourced to a separate company, aiming at lean structures that will help to produce more cost-effectively. As for Swiss wagon load transport, SBB Cargo wants to standardise its services and interleave the offer with the customers’ requirements. The decision about the further implementation is to be made this summer.

By separating and concentrating the two business units, SBB has settled the future direction for strategic impetuses of its cargo division. This is the basis for an economic improvement of SBB Cargo in the future.

In the Swiss wagon load transport SBB Cargo is still providing a full-range product portfolio for the transportation of single wagons, wagon groups and block trains. The major strength apart from the dense network is the tight logistic interlocking with large-scale customers. This relation shall be better structured and expanded in the future. The target is to improve competitiveness by standardising and optimising the network with a central node that concentrates on the shipping industry. Furthermore additional services will be accounted according to cause.

Transport volumes in wagon load transport from/to Germany, Italy and France shall be secured by bilateral cooperative agreements with DB, SNCF and other partners. To ensure competitiveness standards for quality and punctuality will be agreed. Moreover the quality of transportations with X-Rail, an alliance of seven European cargo railway companies, shall be improved and hence strengthen competitiveness against the road.

As for international block train services – particularly container and swap body transportation – SBB Cargo will concentrate on its role as a haulage operator on the north-south corridor between the North Sea ports and northern Italy.
