Gebrüder Weiss use first gas-powered truck with dual-fuel drive

Environmentally friendly truck travels exclusively for Siemens AG Österreich in Greater Vienna

Transport and logistics service provider Gebrüder Weiss has added the first gas-powered truck, fitted with a dual-fuel drive, to their vehicle fleet at the Maria Lanzendorf site (Vienna). In normal operation the 40-tons trailer truck runs on a mixture of 70 per cent methane gas (35 per cent climate-neutral biogas, 35 per cent natural gas) and 30 per cent diesel. This reduces annual CO2 emissions by 58 per cent compared to all-diesel vehicles. From now on the new truck will travel regularly between the sites of the customer Siemens Austria in Vienna.

In cooperation with its project partner Salzburg AG, Gebrüder Weiss had the Volvo truck converted to a dual-fuel system by Infinite GmbH in Salzburg in just two weeks: Along with a diesel tank, the vehicle has two 150-litres gas tanks. Powered by an engine rated at 300 hp with a maximum torque of 1160 Nm, the truck has a range of 300 km.

However, the gas-powered diesel engine produces far less emissions. On the basis of an annual distance of 50,000 km, this means a saving of around 27 tonnes of CO2 per year. In addition, nitrous gases in the exhaust are reduced by 67 per cent and particle emissions are cut by 70 per cent. The vehicle thereby meets Enhanced Environmentally-friendly Vehicle (EEV) requirements.

In the view of Gebrüder Weiss it will be possible to put even more gas-powered trucks on the road in the future. They plan to present this concept also to other customers as a reference model for similar business activities. The basic objective is to gain experience with this technology, and integrate further areas as technical advances are made in terms of horsepower and range, the enterprise writes in a press release.
