„Grounding“ with Hungarian Malév airline

Hungary’s aviation company Malév stopped flight operations from 3 February 2012 due to lack of capital

Since the end of last week everything stands still with the Hungarian Malév airline. The public enterprise stopped flight operations as of 3 February 2012 thus responding to the increasing liquidity problems in the previous days. In a statement on Malév’s website Director Lorant Limburger explained this step with the unbearable economic situation.

The airline has debts at the amount of 76.4 billion forint. Hungary’s prime minister Viktor Orban thinks its not impossible to restart the business. However, he mentioned also that “investors are not queuing up at Malév“, when speaking on the radio.

Malév is deemed to account for about 40 per cent of the traffic volume at the Budapest Ferihegy airport. At the “grounding“ date 22 aircraft operated in the colours of the airline; 18 Boeing 737 jets among them. The number of staff declined continuously over the past years. The airline has currently 2,600 employees on the pay roll. Privatisation of the company had failed two times.
