Stena Line acquires two DFDS routes on Irish Sea

More capacity and variable passages in the Irish route network of Swedish ferry shipping company Stena Line

The Swedish ferry shipping company Stena Line reinforces its commitment in the Irish Sea. For about EUR 47 million the company takes over the previously by DFDS operated routes between Liverpool (Birkenhead) and Belfast as well as between Heysham and Belfast. Both Northern Ireland routes will be integrated into the Stena Line program. Also the chartered ferries Lagan Seaways and Mersey Seaways on the Liverpool-Belfast route and the freight ferries Scotia Seaways and Hibernia Seaways on the Heysham-Belfast route are included in the transaction, as the enterprise announces.

“During the last 10 years, Stena Line has invested approximately EUR 250 million into the improvement of its Irish Sea operations”, said Stena Line CEO Gunnar Blomdahl. “With this takeover we offer our customers even more flexible passages and more capacity to the important hub Belfast. We are working to expand our services in this region.“ Stena Line currently serves the Belfast-Stranraer route and three more links between Great Britain and Ireland.

DFDS will concentrate on the Dublin-Birkenhead and Dublin-Heysham routes in the future. The Northern Ireland traffic from the takeover of Norfolkline caused losses at the amount of EUR 30 million to the enterprise in the past two years.
