Hammer GmbH invests almost EUR 10 million into Green Logistics

Hammer GmbH in Aachen optimises its logistic processes under the aspect of sustainability:

The provider of transport and logistics services Hammer GmbH & Co. KG completed a more than 7,000m² photovoltaic system at its headquarters in Aachen, thereby implementing a key project of its environmental program called Green Logistics. In the frame of the initiative started in 2009, the logistic processes of the enterprise shall be adjusted and optimised successively under the aspect of ecological sustainability. The core elements are: reduction of power consumption, reduction of the emission of harmful substances as well as the use of alternative energy. The corporate group budgeted almost EUR 10 million therefore.

In addition to alternative energy, the reduction of the emission of harmful substances is another pillar of the Green Logistics program. “As a forwarding enterprise operating a large fleet we feel particularly oblieged. We can’t promote cargo transport on the road without significantly improving our environmental balance“, says managing director Wolfgang “Tim“ Hammer. This is the reason why the enterprise invests EUR 6.5 million into the renewal of the fleet. In summer 2011 the successive exchange of the truck fleet has started. Now they are using semi-trailer trucks, type MAN TGX 18.440 XLX Efficient Line. The CO2-emission of this vehicles is 788 grams per kilometre, thus below the Euro 5 standard for trucks and buses. In 2011 Hammer replaced 45 trucks.

40 more vehicles are to follow in 2012. The Green Logistics program includes also the use of energy-saving illuminates. A comprehensive practical test is just being started. In exklusive cooperation with the Nuremberg-based illumination specialist Magna Lux a 2,500 m² warehouse is being equipped with new lamps. The 250 watts mercury vapour lamps will be replaced with 160 watts induction lamps. Both enterprises expect a reduction of power consumption by two thirds, and nine times longer product life.

Hammer GmbH & Co. KG is an internationally operating transport and logistics service provider based in Aachen. Their business segments are land, air and sea freight as well as specific logistics solutions and value added services. The enterprise has locations and partners in 15 European countries. About 550 employees generated an annual turnover at EUR 70 million in 2010.
