Hansaport terminal in Hamburg counts many bulkers

Big demand for bulk goods handling at Port of Hamburg

At the beginning of this month several large bulk goods freighters (Bulkers) called at Germany’s biggest seaport terminal for bulk goods, the HHLA holding Hansaport. After the large bulker RUBENA N has delivered almost 149,000 tons of ore from South Africa on 27 August 2009, the vessels BW FJORD and APOSTOLOS followed on 30 August with 120,000 tons and 75,000 tons, respectively. On 1 September RUBIN POWER took over the berth at Salzgitterkai from APOSTOLOS, to unload 70,000 tons of ore. In the coming days Port of Hamburg expects more ore-freighters with loads between 70,000 and 110,000 tons from Brazil, Canada, Norway and Sweden.

Hansaport has three berths available for ocean carriers to unload cargo. The maximum unloading capacity of the facilities is 110,000 tons in 24 hours. Moreover the terminal is equipped with a rail station offering 15 tracks for the handling of block train traffic, and berths for loading and unloading river vessels.

Last year Port of Hamburg handled 42.5 million tons of bulk cargo. In the first six months of 2009 the volume declined 13.1 per cent. This was mainly due to the falling demand from the steel and power industry for ore and coal.
