Kuehne + Nagel wants to grow faster than the market in 2012

Kuehne + Nagel achieved strong volume growth in all business areas and set a new record for net income in the 2011 fiscal year

Follwing a successful year 2011, the Kuehne + Nagel group is pursuing ambitious goals also in the current fiscal period. According to the statements of CEO Reinhard Lange the global logistics company – based on the investments made lately – will achieve a profitable, above-market growth in all business areas in 2012. The uncertain economic development will be met with consistent cost management, process optimisation and productivity, the manager announced.

With more than 63,000 employees the globally operating group maintained its growth momentum in a challenging market environment in the 2011 fiscal year. Due to the strong Swiss Franc, turnover decreased by 3.3 per cent to CHF 19,6 billion. The operational result at CHF 978 million was 2.6 per cent below the previous year’s level. Currency adjusted the enterprise posted an increase of 9.3 per cent and 9.6 per cent for these two positions of the profit and loss account. However, net earnings reached with CHF 606 million a new record high.

As for the seafreight unit Kuehne + Nagel handled more than 3 million TEU for the first time. With a volume increase of 11 per cent, particularly driven by inner-Asian and non-European trades, the company grew twice as fast as the international container market.

In airfreight, tonnage increased 13 per cent in view of the market’s cargo volumes, which were 0.7 per cent below the previous year’s figure. This performance was due to the perishables logistics segment, and the intensified sales of industry-specific airfreight solutions.

The consistent expansion of activities in the segments groupage, full and part loads and industry-specific distribution led to an 18.8 per cent increase of net turnover in local currencies. Contract logistics activities were marked by strongly diverging, regional developments in 2011. In contract logistics, 2011 was characterised by strongly divergent regional developments. While Germany and the Netherlands achieved outstanding results, business in some Southern and Western European countries was negatively affected by the softening consumer demand. Good progress was made in Asia and South America. In North America, Kuehne + Nagel achieved a significantly improved result. On a currency-neutral basis, net turnover rose by 7.8 per cent.
