Harbour gate Freudenau stands the first test

Harbour gate at the port of Vienna was closed for the first time on 14 January to protect at 1 million-m² working area

 

The harbour gate Freudenau, which was finished in May 2010 stood its first test. The facility fully made from steel has a length of 26.5 metres and is 13.5 metres high. The door was closed for the first time to protect the port of Vienna and the working area of around 1 million square metres on 14 January.„Even before the water could reach an alarming level for the harbour basin, the gate was closed on 14 January at 3:30 pm. Just when the high water eased on 16 January at 1 am. All clear was given and the harbour gate was opened for navigation again“, the port of Vienna informs in a press release.

The water level inside the harbour basin was regulated by its own pumping station, equipped with three big submerged pumps, being able to pump out a total of more than three cubic metres of water per second.
