HHLA group gains market share in the North Range

HHLA group registered strong growth in container throughput and hinterland transport in the first half-year:

Business development of Hamburger Hafen und Logistik AG has beat expectations of the management board in the first half of the year 2011. Container throughput was up 29.6 per cent compared to last year, and rose to 3.41 million TEU. Far East traffic was the growth driver (up 32 per cent to 1.57 million TEU) as well as feeder traffic for Central and Eastern Europe across the Baltic Sea (up 72 per cent to 440,000 TEU).

Hinterland transport by road and rail increased 15.9 per cent to a total of 925,000 TEU. At EUR 583 million for the period from January to June 2011, the revenue generated by HHLA grew by 18.9 per cent compared to the first half of 2010. The operating result (EBIT) rose 14.4 per cent to EUR 93.1 million.

Klaus-Dieter Peters, Chairman of the Executive Board at HHLA is optimistic regarding the further business development and said: "If the latest turbulence on the financial markets does not permanently curb the previous trends in the global economy, we expect increases in the region of 15 per cent in container transport, revenue and earnings for the full year. In terms of container throughput we believe that growth of as much as 20 per cent is within reach", he commented on the publication of the interim report for January to June 2011.

In hinterland transport the intermodal companies in the HHLA group expanded their concept of integrated transport chains with direct rail and shuttle services. Therefore the group has opened another inland terminal in Ostrava, Czech Republic, with an annual capacity of up to 200,000 TEU in June 2011. In Poland, the centrally located new hub terminal in Poznán will open shortly.
