HHLA reinforces position in fruit logistics
New era of fruit logistics with Hamburg based HHLA Group Opening a new fully-automated refrigerated shed, equipped with four individually controlled cool chambers, the HHLA Group reinforces the position of the Port of Hamburg as one of the most important locations for fruit logistics in Europe. With an investment volume of approximately EUR 35 million, the facility is the core of HHLA’s investment programme at O’Swaldkai multi purpose terminal. “At O’Swaldkai we are setting new benchmarks in fruit logistics,” said HHLA Managing Director Michael Sieck as the new refrigerated shed was taken into service. “Storage capacity at HHLA’s ‘Frucht- und Kühl Zentrum’ was enlarged by around 8,200 pallet slots and the efficiency of the entire facility was substantially increased. In addition, we can now offer our customers continuous transparency in the transport chain for each separate pallet of banana cartons,” Mr. Sieck said. With the HHLA Frucht- und Kühlzentrum fully utilized, up to 1,000 persons are employed. Around 450 ships call there every year. Large areas of Germany as well as Scandinavia and the Baltic States, central and eastern Europe are supplied with ‘Hamburgian’ fruits. The largest element by far consists of about 750,000 tons of bananas per year. Moreover, almost 100,000 tons of other fruits such as pineapples, grapes and apples from overseas also handled here.
