IMS-Gruppe moved almost 190,000 TEU in 2010

Significant volume increase but declining revenue per TEU for the neutral container operator IMS Vienna

The Vienna-based IMS group transported almost 190,000 TEU and registered a consolidated turnover of EUR 51 million in the year 2010. Combined transport accounted for around 120,000 TEU thereof; pure train operation accounted for 70,000 TEU thereof.

CEO Wolfgang Tomassovich is highly satisfied with the considerable volume increase compared to 2009. However he is concerned about the development of the margins. IMS posted a 15%-decline in revenue per TEU compared to 2009, while expenses for services rose by up to 5 per cent. The IMS head names the reasons for these declining revenues: massive competitive pressure on the routes between the Northern ports and Austria.

“In spite of volume increases there was much too much capacity available in 2010“, Tomassovich explains. “This situation eased at the start of 2011, but imbalance bothers us on many routes. It impedes an ideal utilisation, which in turn impacts on revenue. Also annual price increases for lines and energy can only be passed partly to customers.”
