IMS Rail launches new shuttle train Switzerland – Italian ports

Regular shuttle train connection Frenkendorf – Melzo offers Swiss industry rail connection to Genoa, La Spezia and Ravenna

On May 15, 2013, the neutral Basel-based operator IMS Rail Switzerland AG starts operating the new shuttle train connection "Frenkendorf – Melzo shuttle". The connection is oriented to the unaccompanied combined transport (UCT) between the Swiss container terminal Fenkendorf (close to Basel) and the Italian container terminal Melzo (east from Milan).

From Melzo direct trains connect the Italian offshore terminals Genova Voltri Mare, Genova Sech, La Spezia LSCT and Ravenna several times a day. All conventional maritime intermodal transport units from 20 ‚to 45‘, as well as flat, open top containers and special containers are accepted for transport on the shuttle. Located east of the Lombard capital, the terminal in Melzo, Milano, is also ideally located for continental traffic to and from the routes between Milano and Venezia. A specialised truck fleet is available for delivery and pickup in Melzo.

The "Frenkendorf – Melzo shuttle" connects Italian offshore terminals through a continuous rail link to Switzerland, making the long-cherished wish of the Swiss industry and Swiss freight forwarders come true. This allows to disentangle maritime traffic, which is strongly oriented to the northern ports (Rotterdam, Hamburg, Antwerp) and offers new transport options in hinterland traffic with seaports from the Far East to the Mediterranean Sea. In the final stage of expansion each container train will be able to transport about 40 truck loads. IMS Rail offers also overnight service via the Frenkendorf terminal to all rail sidings and stations in Switzerland.

IMS Rail Switzerland AG operates the train systems "Rhine shuttle Basel" (Rotterdam – Frenkendorf BL), "Rhine shuttle Zurich" (Rotterdam – Rekingen AG) and "Erasmus shuttle" (Rotterdam – Basel Bad Ubf) as well as the "Léman shuttle", which connects Genève andChavornay via Frenkendorf with Rotterdam, and from now on also with Italy. The neutral rail transport operator for unaccompanied combined transport (UCT) with headquarters in Basel and is a is a subsidiary company of the IMS-Intermove Systemst GmbH in Vienna.
