Inland transport on the Danube grew to 1.2 million tonnes

Goods group “ores and metal scrap“ remained the biggest volume transported on the Danube

A total of 10.7 million tonnes of goods was hauled as freight transport on the Austrian section of the Danube in the survey year 2012, an increase of 0.8 million tonnes (+7.8 per cent) compared to 2011. This was announced by Statistics Austria on 27 March 2013. The total transport performance (i.e. the product of transport volume and covered distance) was 10.5 billion tonne-kilometres (tkm) and therefore by 9.8 per cent higher than 2011. Around 2.2 billion tkm (+3.2 per cent) of this transport performance took place on the Austrian section of the Danube. The number of laden journeys declined from 10,325 to 9,481 (-8.2 per cent).

Accounting for 2.9 million tonnes, the group of “ores and metal scrap“ remained the cargo group with the biggest volume transported on the Danube. This group is followed by “oil and mineral oil products“ (2.1 million tonnes), „agricultural and forestry products, and living animals“ (up 7.8 per cent to 1.8 million tonnes) as well as “fertilisers” (1.1 million tonnes).

While international goods receipt declined by 2.3 per cent to 5.4 million tonnes in the reference year, inland transport showed a growth of 119.4 per cent to 1.2 million tonnes. The transit showed an increase in transport volume by 6.3 per cent to 2.4 million tonnes. The international goods dispatch rose by 5 per cent to 1.6 million tonnes compared to the previous year.
