Kuehne + Nagel doubles space of its Leipzig logistics centre

Kuehne + Nagel: Expansion of the logistics centre for pharmaceutical products at the Leipzig cargo centre has started operation

In 2013 Kuehne + Nagel opened its state-of-the-art logistics facility at the Leipzig cargo centre, which is designed for logistics handling of pharmaceutical products. Thanks to the positive business development the logistics area had now been doubled to 20,000 m² in a second construction phase.

The plant complies with all standards of the Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) of the pharmaceutical industry. The active temperature control of the halls offering 36,000 pallet spaces allows for goods storage between 15 and 25 degrees Celsius, and in some sections cooling to 2 to 8 degrees Celsius. Temperature recording and monitoring ensure compliance with the desired temperature.

In addition to the warehousing and distribution of products the scope of services includes value-added services such as order picking, packing and repacking. There will also be the possibility of „sample drawing“. Thanks to its convenient location the pharmaceutical facility can serve Kuehne + Nagel’s customers as trans-national and trans-European distribution hub.

„I am very pleased that our business activities in Leipzig are developing positively,“ said Klaus-Michael Kuehne at the inaugurational ceremony. „The new investment underlines the dynamic and the importance attached to this historic site within the Kuehne + Nagel network. In 1913 my grandfather August Kuehne has set up the first Kuehne + Nagel branch. In 2015 – the anniversary year of the Kuehne + Nagel Group – we can look back on 25 successful years in Leipzig and in East Germany. “

After the completion of the expansion Kuehne + Nagel manages a total of 61,000 m² handling and storage area at its sites in Leipzig, Berlin, Chemnitz, Dresden and Erfurt. The branch network of the East region has around 500 employees; about 70 young professionals are trained there as well. 1,000 more workers are employed by a German automotive manufacturer established in Leipzig.
