LogServ reveices ‘klimaaktiv’-award for its lighting system upgrade

New LED-lights along the 140 kilometres rail network of voestalpine Stahl in Linz (Upper Austria) has a sustainable impact and increases safety

The ‘energieeffiziente betriebe’-program byklimaaktiv, a climate protection initiative launched by the Ministry of agriculture, forestry, environment and water management, is focussed on new economical and ecological ways. The new LED lighting, which has been installed in 2014 along the about 140 kilometres rail network at the voestalpine plant in Linz, shows this is a very important issue to Logistik Service GmbH (LogServ). Last week the klimaaktiv award recognised the manifold impacts of energy efficiency resulting from this project.

There are two targets in the background of this modernisation: More energy efficiency and increased safety for employees. As to sustainability, the LEDs score along the line: The lights can be controlled and dimmed individually or in groups. This adjustment to the actual need for light has an enormous savings potential. The lower energy consumption and significantly longer service life of up to

100,000 hours are further aspects of ecological effectiveness.

LEDs also have clear advantages with regard to safety: the yellow light of the sodium vapor lamps made it difficult to distinguish colours, especially during the nighttime. The white light of the LED lamps now allows for good colour rendering.

About a quarter of the area, where about 25 locomotives are in use 24/7, and 100 daily trains are handled, was equipped with the new lighting in March this year. Within the next four years, lighting according to the LED standard should be installed at the entire premises of voestalpine.

„With this project we are implementing a modernization project, that serves as a role model for railways throughout the country,“ Johannes Mayrhofer, director infrastructure / customer service at LogServ, is convinced. Together with Markus Schinko, managing director of LogServ, he accepted the ‘klimaactiv’-award in early December from Andrä Rupprechter, minister of the environment, who emphasised: „Ecology and economy complement each other, because climate protection measures also pay off financially.“
