Logwin uses RFID for tyre logistics

Logwin Logistics accelerates tyre logistics in Traiskirchen

The Logwin Group breaks new ground in tyre logistics. The tyre logistics centre in Traiskirchen near the Austrian capital Vienna counts on Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) for the handling of wheel sets. Instead of barcode labels the company is using RFID-tags for identification. “RFID simplifies the handling, saves time and allows us to register goods movements even clearer”, as Michael Peschek, Project Manager in the Logwin Solutions division of in Austria, explained the advantages.

At the moment Logwin is using RFID at the location in Traiskirchen only for wheel-set fitting. This additional logistics service shows a steadily rising demand. We are producing up to 41,000 wheel sets per month in shift-operation on four to five production lanes”, said Mr. Peschek. Within the production putting the RFID-tag onto the fitted wheel is the last work step included in quality control. Hence every tyre has its own registration number.

RFID-tags are less sensible in handling than barcode labels. Grease, dirt, paint, plastic packing or folds that might arise from sticking tags onto the tyres are not affecting readability. Another advantage: manual scanning is not necessary. At several points of the logistics chain reading devices are registering automatically the registration numbers of the RFID-tags of all 16 wheels on one pallet. The reading rate is 100 per cent in goods output.

“ The current RFID-system allows only to use half of the options this technology offers“, said Thomas Eisen, Managing Director of the Logwin-Solutions division in Austria. “We can imagine to introduce RFID in the future at other locations as well – in particular for product groups that require 100%-exact order-picking, which is quite complex without using RFID.”
