Major investment of J. Müller in the port of Brake

J. Müller corporate group to construct state-of-the-art silo facility after throughput record in 2012

2012 has been a year of strong business development for the J. Müller corporate group. Handling a total of 6.165 million tonnes of cargo they reached a throughput record in sea borne freight transport in the port of Brake. This success is mainly based on the four pillars agriculture, iron & steel, on and offshore wind power and forestry products, which has been quite volatile last year.

Trusting in the on-demand provisioning of infrastructure by the federal government and the state, the J. Müller group will strengthen the location in Brake this year with a record expenditure of a total EUR 31 million. The lion’s share of this investment will go into the construction of a high-performance, ultra-modern silo, which – once completed – will offer 47,000 tonnes of additional storage space for grain, fodder and oilseeds. The total storage capacity of J. Müller Agri Terminal in Brake increases to more than 500,000 tonnes.

In 2012 about 3.2 million tonnes of grain and fodder were handled at the J. Müller facilities in the port of Brake, which is 19 per cent more than last year. The breakbulk terminal recorded throughput volumes of 2.06 million tonnes in 2012 – an increase of 18 per cent compared to 2011. In the segment of iron and steel throughput a total of 688,500 tonnes was handled, 91 per cent more than in 2011. Also throughput of wind energy components showed significant increases.

The basis for this growth was Niedersachsenkai-terminal, which had been purpose-built for handling steel, project and wind energy cargo, and was extended by a second berth in May 2012. In 2013 the Niedersachsenkai will be further equipped with a warehouse and a second effective heavy lift crane.
