More ro-ro capacity at Port of Kiel

Seaport of Kiel finalised expansion of Schwedenkai according to schedule

A new era is to begin at Port of Kiel. At the Schwedenkai around EUR 30 million were invested into the expansion of the site, the construction of a modern terminal building and the restructuring of handling logistics processes. Dirk Claus, Managing Director of Seehafen Kiel GmbH & Co. KG: „The new Schwedenkai counts among the strongest terminal facilities to handle large ro-pax vessels in the Baltic Sea.“ The investment to optimize terminal logistics includes a new ro-ro bridge and new throughput devices. The Management expects the expansion to double the annual throughput capacity at the quay which is currently about 40,000 load units.

Seehafen Kiel GmbH is a 100 per cent subsidiary of the regional capital Kiel. About 5 million tons of loads are handled at the terminals at the Stadthafen and Ostuferhafen per year; 2 million passengers are going on or from bord. The new 12-storeyed terminal building at Schwedenkai houses the administration of the seaport and of Stena Line in Germany.
