New big contract at Containerterminal Ennshafen

As of 1 October BMW Motoren will ship all engines from Ennshafen to the northern ports

Port of Enns has landed a significant new business deal. As of 1 October the BMW engine plant in Steyr will ship all their gasoline- and diesel-driven engines, that have overseas final destinations, to the northern ports via the CTE (Containerterminal Ennshafen). Engines for the northern American market are transported to Bremerhaven on block-trains. Shipments to South Africa run via Hamburg.

The operators for this new form of container logistics are the shipping line MSC Mediterranean Shipping Company, the container operator TFG Transfracht as well as Rail Cargo Austria and DB Schenker Rail as traction providers. Without exception 40 ft containers will be used which can hold 64 6-cylinder engines or 96 4-cylinder engines. The BMW plant Steyr expects a total output (incl. Europe) of up to a million engines in 2010.

Port of Enns has registered a significant increase of activities in container traffic in 2010. General manager Christian Steindl expects a total volume of 215.000 to 220.000 TEU following 159.000 TEU last year. At the moment Port of Enns handles 50 block trains per week with destinations in Austria, Rotterdam, Hamburg and Bremerhaven. In the course of a reorganisation of the Austria-operations, TFG Transfracht expands the port operations by four block-trains to Hamburg and Bremerhaven starting on 4 October. MSC opened a container depot on the CTE site on 10 September.
