New train loading station for liquid bulk in Rotterdam

Green light for construction start on train loading station at Botlek Tank Terminal in the Port of Rotterdam

Botlek Tank Terminal B.V. announced that it has given the go-ahead to start work on a new train loading station in Rotterdam in the middle of this week. The station, with two 340-metre tracks, will be able to load six wagons simultaneously, at a rate of 400 tonnes per hour. Construction of this new rail link, at a cost of EUR 2 million, will take around six months, they inform.

The new train loading station is a response to growing customer demand for rail transport. The station will be used initially to load block trains with biodiesel and will be modified in due course to handle other oil products such as jet fuel, gasoline, diesel and edible oils. From two trains a week at the start, throughput can be increased to two trains a day.

The state-of-the-art Botlek Tank Terminal offers deepwater berths and facilities for the transhipment and storage of a wide range of liquid bulk products. The 420-metre pier is capable of handling two seagoing vessels of up to 115,000 DWT and two tank barges simultaneously, 24 hours a day. The existing terminal, consisting of 34 storage tanks with a combined capacity of 200,000 m3, qualifies as a an environment-friendly ‘zero-emission terminal’. The Port of Rotterdam gave a view to Botlek Tank Terminal B.V. to expand storage capacity to a maximum of 750,000 m3.
