Port of Antwerp: Scheldt deepening comes to final phase

Deepening of the Scheldt navigation channel for large container ships to be finalised within in a year

On 12 February the final phase of the deepening of the river Scheldt has started at Port of Antwerp. The works are concentrated on the Dutch side of the Scheldt. It is expected that they are completed within 12 months. Then the container shipping industry will have better options to use the Belgian seaport.

After the deepening work at the river Scheldt will be finished, the port of Antwerp will permit tide-independent navigation for container vessels of a maximum draft of 13.1 metres. The present draught limit is 11,9 metres. Vessels with a draught of up to 15 metres will be able to leave the port of Antwerp at high tide. Moreover the deepening of the Scheldt increases the time windows for tide-independent navigation of large container vessels.
