Port of Antwerp: Severe down in key segments

Setback for Port of Antwerp in goods groups steel, forestry products, iron ore and coal

The Belgian seaport Antwerp registered severe declines in throughput of important goods groups in the year 2009. Steel volumes showed a year-on-year decline of 44.7 per cent to 5.49 million tons. As for forestry products (timber, paper, cellulose) throughput volumes fell 48 per cent to 1.24 million tons. Ores showed an even worse down of 64.4 per cent. Business with coal declined by 37.9 per cent.

According to the transport figures that were published yesterday, the total throughput at Port of Antwerp amounted to 157.8 million tons (down 16.7 per cent) in 2009. Import volumes decreased by 22.3 per cent to 81.6 million tons. Export volumes weighed 76.2 million tons in total (down 9.7 per cent). Container transport sunk 15.6 per cent to 7.31 million TEU.

RoRo volumes deteriorated by 27.6 per cent to 3.2 million tons. In total 770,319 cars were despatched, which is a decline of around 20 per cent. The conventional/break bulk segment lost 38.3 on the previous year and shows 10.45 million tons in the annual statistics.
