Port of Hamburg: 260,000 TEU transit with Austria

On 21 February 2019, the Port of Vienna, together with its longstanding partner the Port of Hamburg, Germany’s largest seaport and one of the most important logistics hubs in Europe, hosted an information evening in Vienna. At the event, the guests were informed about the company developments of the Port of Hamburg.

In 2018 the Port of Hamburg handled 260,000 TEU of transit volume to and from Austria, which is about 8% below last year’s level (280,000 TEU). These figures were announced at the information event by Alexander Till, Head of the Vienna Representative Office of Hafen Hamburg Marketing.

This decline was among other things due to the fact that an increasing number of ports is entering the Austrian market, he added. Thus 2018 wasn’t among the best years in Austria for the Port of Hamburg; however, Germany’s biggest maritime port has been leading in the container segment in Austria for 40 years.

Hamburg is confidently looking forward to the year 2019. The move of four transatlantic container lines is expected to bring an additional volume of approximatley 500,000 TEU to the port at the Elbe river. In total, the marketing organisation of the Port of Hamburg is anticipating a growth in container volume between 3 and 4% in 2019.
