Port of Kiel profits from booming ferry traffic

Considerably increasing cargo throughput with Port of Kiel in the first six months of 2010

Cargo throughput at the seaport of Kiel shows an upward trend again. In the first six months of 2010 the volume has risen 13.4 per cent on last year, to 2.7 million tons. The east bank harbour registered its best result since the start of operation 25 years ago. This positive development is mainly due to the ferry liner services towards the Baltic States, Russia and Scandinavia, as well as the container transport service launched last year.

In absolute figures the ferry service has gained most on the route from Kiel to Klaipeda. The mark of 1 million tons was beat for the first time. The use of the new large ropax-ferry “Lisco Maxima“ has increased the competitiveness of short sea traffic from and to Lithuania. In container transport over 10,000 TEU were handled in the first six months.
