Port of Rostock shows substantial decline in ferry traffic

The seaport of Rostock achieved a new record in cargo handling in 2008. With 27.2 million tons (gross) of dispatched freight the reference value of the previous year was exceeded by 700,000 tons or 3 per cent. “Thanks to a big plus in the RoRo-, liquid- and bulk cargo segments we could achieve a positive overall balance“, Ulrich Bauermeister, Managing Director of the Hafen-Entwicklungsgesellschaft Rostock, announced to journalists.

At the end of the year the company had handled 13.7 million tons of ferry goods, which equals a decline of 1.4 million tons or 10 per cent compared to the year 2007. The volume of RoRo cargo rose from 1 million tons to 2.3 million tons. The amount of liquid goods moved through the port showed an 18%-increase to 4.7 million tons compared to the figures of 2007.

The bulk cargo figures skyrocketed by 17 per cent to 5.9 million tons. The general cargo segment showed a total throughput of 600,000 tons of freight, which is about 400,000 tons less than in 2007. At the port’s terminal for combined transport a total of 69.053 cargo units with a total tonnage of 1.46 million tonnes were moved. Compared to the figures of 2007 this is a 14 percent increase in units.
