Port of Rotterdam launches new connection to Austria

ICA’s block trains will connect Salzburg and the Dutch seaport of Rotterdam

A new rail liner service for hinterland traffic between Austria and Rotterdam was opened. Since 3 November  Intercontainer Austria offers a block train service from the container terminal in Salzburg. The new “shuttle“ is integrated into the “Flying Dutchman”-system of the container operator. The schedule comprises two departures per week. The trains arrive in Rotterdam on Wednesdays and Saturdays. They approach the terminals RCS Rail Cargo Center at Eemhaven and ECT Maasvlakte.

According to their own account Port of Rotterdam was able to raise the market share in container transport from and to Austria to around 25 per cent in the past years. Around 80 per cent of the consignments are transported on the railway. The current offer comprises 16 to 17 block trains per week. Intercontainer Austria’s “Flying Dutchman“-system connects Rotterdam and the Austrian terminals Enns, Salzburg, Wels and Vienna.
