Quehenberger Logistics manages sensitive art transport

Project logistis of a special kind: Quehenberger Logistics forwards sculpture of Jörg Immendorf from Bremen to Salzburg

Also the arts industry is sometimes in need of the service concepts of specialists in the segment of international transport logistics. A current example therefore is a case from Austria. The “Museum der Moderne Salzburg“ charged Quehenberger Logistics with the transport of the sculpture called “Affentor“ created by the artist Jörg Immendorff from Bremen to Salzburg. The sculpture, which stood just in front of the major railway station in Bremen since 2007, will decorate the entrance of the MdM Rupertinum in Salzburg on loan.

At a weight of 5.5 tons, a length of 5.5 meters and a height of 5.4 meters, this is a job of specific requirements for the transport logistics. Quehenberger Logistics took this as an opportunity for extensive preparations to ensure optimal conditions, such as the locking service during the loading and unloading. Organisation of approvals from the competent authorities, coordination of traffic control measures and the consideration of the particularities of the loading and unloading stations were an integral part of the planning work.

The loading of the sculpture was carried out with two mobile cranes on 5 March. After the transport securing by means of a special transport frame the low loader started its journey to Salzburg at 10 p.m., where the Immendorff piece of art is expected to arrive on 8 March at 8 a.m.

The heavy transport is carried out exclusively by night, accompanied by an BF3 escort vehicle. Within Bremen and Salzburg, the transport is accompanied by a police escort. This special transportation is directed by the German subsidiary of Quehenberger Logistics. The branch in Heusenstamm specialises in complex project logistics using various modes of transport such as rail, containers or river vessels. The company handles many projects, mainly from Western Europe to Russia and to the CIS.
