Rail cargo traffic in Traisental to be continued

“Region Traisen-Gölsental GmbH“ to take over cargo transport between Freiland and St. Aegyd from April 2012

Cargo transport on the railway in Traisental, Lower Austria, is to be continued to its full extent beyond 31 March 2012. Kleinregion Traisen-Gölsental will form a company for this purpose, as Dr. Petra Bohuslav

(Lower Austrian council for business, tourism and sports)and Mag. Karl Wilfing (Lower Austrian council for education, youth and regional planning) announced in St. Pölten on 22 December.

As of 1 April 2012 the company “Region Traisen-Gölsental GmbH“ is to take over the operation and infrastructure of the 17 kilometres railway route between  Freiland und St. Aegyd. In the coming ten years about EUR 4.58 million will be invested into improvements and modernisation of this railway. Rail operation remains in the hands of Rail Cargo Austria.

About 65,000 tons of goods are transported on the railway between Freiland and St. Aegyd per year. In the next years this volume shall rise to about 90,000 tons. The continuous operation of this rail route saves about 4,000 truck trips and thus 1,000 tons of CO2 per year.
