RCA-rail loading station Schönwies/Starkenbach earns award

Kieswerk Starkenbach brings more than 200,000 tons of excavation material per year to the railway at the RCA loading station in Schönwies:

Last week the gravel plant Kieswerk Starkenbach GmbH was awarded the VCÖ-Mobilitätspreis 2011 (mobility prize) in the category “cargo transport“ for its environmentally friendly form of handling transportations. The prize honours the rail loading station, which had been modernised with the support of Rail Cargo Austria AG (RCA) two years ago. This saved about 3.2 million truck kilometres in 2010 alone. More than 200,000 tons of excavation material is transported on the railway per year. This project shows that shifting transport from road to rail is not just protecting the climate, but also economically efficient, as VCÖ explains its decision.

The tracks of the rail siding in Schönwies were double to a length of 600 metres, in order to be able to handle the major order from Rail Cargo Austria (RCA), agreed for the coming 20 years. Since October 2009 the material is transported 500 metres by the double stacked conveyor belt from the gravel plant Kieswerk Starkenbach under the motorway A12, over the river Inn to the rail siding. Every day two 1.600 tons cargo trains depart from there, pulling up to 18 wagons from Tyrol to Vorarlberg. Up to 4,000 tons of material for being loaded onto the trains can be held on interim storage at the rail loading station. This material is fed via a conveyor belt to the special wagons of Rail Cargo Austria. A complete train can be loaded within 110 minutes.
