Reactivation of rail logistics with the Zapf-company

Zapf GmbH delivers prefabricated garages on the railway from Bayreuth to destinations at home and abroad

Rail cargo transport with the Zapf GmbH is celebrating a comeback. Eight years after the last cargo train has left the plant in Weidenberg (Germany), transports with prefabricated garages are rolling again on the rail. The aim of the Management is to reinforce the use of the railway operations. DB Schenker Rail and Transa Spedition have developed a special rail logistics concept therefore.

Zapf will operate several logistics centres in Germany and the neighbouring countries, which shall serve as hubs for the supply of construction sites with prefabricated garages and prefabricated concrete components. The supply of the logistics centres will be handled by DB Schenker Rail. The construction sites will be supplied by truck.

The renewed rail track at the Zapf-company’s plant in Weidenberg will be used as a point of departure. The first regular rail transportation of 20 prefabricated garages was carried out recently. The parts exceeded the regular load measures: they had a maximum height of three metres, a width of more than three metres and lengths of nearly eight metres. Therefore the rail transportation is carried out with special flat wagons. The operative handling of customers’ orders is carried out at the business location of Transa Spedition GmbH in Regensburg.
