Rhenus group acquires deep sea terminal in Rotterdam

Rhenus Logistics B.V. takes over 100 per cent of the shares of DFDS Seaways Maasvlakte B.V.:

Rhenus Port Logistics is consolidating its commitment in Rotterdam: The logistics service supplier took over a 200,000 m² deep sea terminal in Europe’s biggest seaport, effective 1 June 2011. The facility has direct access to the North Sea. This means Rhenus Logistics B.V. acquired 100 per cent of the shares of DFDS Seaways Maasvlakte B.V., an operator of deep sea terminals in Rotterdam and part of the DFDS-A/S group. The newly acquired company complements the capacities of the German enterprise at Waalhaven.

„The deep sea terminal will be a profit for the Rhenus group as a whole“, says Peter van der Steen, managing director of Rhenus Logistics B.V. “The acquisition helps us to continue our growth process as an integrated logistics service provider in the Netherlands.“ During the initial period the deep sea terminal will act under the name Rhenus Logistics Deep Sea Terminal B.V. The purchased area covers 20 hectares and a quay length of 500 metres. For ro-ro throughput two ramps at 300 metres are available at the water.

“The draft of 16.50 metres offers considerable advantages compared to many other terminals situated between Le Havre and Hamburg”, explains Peter van der Steen. The facility can be used as a central hub for many transport segments – such as bulk goods, general cargo, containers, ro-ro and project loads. The terminal has good connections to the hinterland by truck, railway and river vessels. Two mobile cranes are able to lift each 100 tons and 150 tons together.
