RZD head Vladimir Yakunin scatters roses over Austria

Russian Railways (RZD) confirms pushing for a quick prolongation of the broad gauge from Kosice to Vienna:

In a press talk on the occasion of the 2nd railway congress in Moscow Vladimir Yakunin, President of Russian Railways (RZD), emphasised on his interest in quickly prolonging the broad gauge railway from Kosice via Bratislava to Vienna. He was positive about the project to be implemented soon, the top manager explained to international journalists.

The construction of the broad gauge railway (1,520 mm) from eastern Slovakia to Austria can be implemented within two years as the RZD head estimates. Rail transport can be operated in about three years after the decision about the project was made, he adds. Total costs of the construction of the railway route amount to about EUR 5 billion according to his estimation.

Vladimir Yakunin refers to Austria as the best point of departure and destination for an increased commitment of Russian Railways to trans-European cargo traffic. “Vienna offers good connections on the railway, road and waterway. These are favourable conditions that allow pre and on carriage of container block trains on the trans-Siberian route from Europe to east Asia and return“, the RZD head announces.
