SBB Cargo keeps crisis impact limited

Collapse in transport volume and revenues at SBB Cargo

Also SBB Cargo is affected by the weak economy in Europe. Cargo freight volume transported by the Swiss railway in the first six months of 2009 declined substantially. “Thanks to the early induced effective measures we were able to keep the impact of the crisis limited, in particular compared to our competitors“, Nicolas Perrin, CEO of SBB Cargo states. Moreover the cargo results were improved by the liquidation of provisions at the amount of CHF 16 million that are no longer needed.

In the reporting period SBB Cargo has quickly adapted its capacities for transit and inland transport to the declining demand. In total transport revenues fell 16.2 per cent to EUR 286.5 million. Demand has particularly shrunk for steel and metal transportations, but also for wood/paper and chemicals. The decline in transit traffic was 23 per cent, while river transport showed a minus of 5 per cent.
