Scandlines modernises its fleet and expands capacity

Scandlines shipping line to double the capacity on the Rostock-Gseder route effective spring 2012:

The Scandlines GmbH ferry shipping company, operating in the triangle between Denmark, Germany and Sweden, as well as on the routes to the Baltic States and Finland, is modernising its 15 vessels fleet. The enterprise based in Rostock will put into operation two newbuildings as of the end of March and end of May 2012, respectively. The identically constructed vessels MS Copenhagen and MS Berlin replace two older, smaller ferry vessels. The ferries are being built by P+S shipyard in Stralsund and offer capacity for 460 cars or 90 trucks, 1,500 passengers or 1,600 loading metres.

In total the Scandlines shipping company invested EUR 230 million into the ordered vessels as well as into the expansion of the two ports of call Rostock and Gseder, in order to be able to handle the ships with a length of 169 metres, a width of 24.8 metres and a draught of 5.5 metres. Around EUR 43 million thereof will be used to build a new terminal and a new check-in area at the port of Gseder. After completion two berths will be available at the port of Rostock from 2012.

Simultaneous loading/unloading of both decks of the new ships shall ensure the 15 minutes call in the ports is not exceeded, as Søren Poulsgaard Jensen, Scandlines Managing Director, emphasises in the talk with the Austrian transport magazine Österreichische Verkehrszeitung.
