Scandlines registers clear uptrend in freight traffic

Stronger utilisation of ferry traffic with Scandlines GmbH in the Baltic Sea region by international forwarding companies

The liner services of Scandlines GmbH (Rostock) in the Baltic Sea region meet growing demand at international forwarding companies. Following the crisis period in 2009 the ferry shipping company registers a clear uptrend in demand in the current year. Soren Poulsgaard Jensen, COO Freight Based Network, gives an outlook to a more than 10-per cent increase of freight units transported on connections from Germany to Denmark and Sweden. “On the conncetions from Travemünde to Ventspils and Liepaja in Latvia I expect 20 to 30 per cent more volume“, the Manager says in the interview with the Austrian transport magazine Österreichische Verkehrszeitung.

Scandlines operates 9 shipping lines linking 12 Baltic ports with 17 ferry vessels. In the year 2009 the shipping company transported about 11.9 million passengers, 2.7 million cars, 600,000 trucks, 32,000 rail cars and 52,000 buses. 2,300 employees generated a turnover at EUR 505 million. The circle of the shareholders has been streamlined early November. DSR Deutsche Seereederei has sold its 20%share package equally to the financial investors Allianz Capital and 3i Group, who are now holding 50 per cent of the share capital each.
