Sea Terminal Sassnitz (STS) about to be enlarged

Additional quay facility for Sea Terminal Sassnitz

A new building is to be added to the Sea Terminal Sassnitz (STS) in Sassnitz/Mukran at Rügen Island. In two construction steps the facility will be enlarged by berth N° 9 with a quay length of 175 metres and a water-depth of 10.5 metres. Together with berth N° 8, which has a water-depth of 9.5 metres, STS will have a total quay length of 365 metres. This was announced by Heinz J. Wasser, Managing Director, at the TransRussia fair in Moscow.

The construction of berth N° 9 will enlarge the existing terminal area of 20,000 square metres by another 17,500 square metres. The new area will provide a 5,000 square metres hall for bulk goods. The hall will be divided into three equal segments, offering space for the storage of around 30,000 tons of goods.

These steps to expand the infrastructure are taken in order to response to future-requirements in conventional throughput and in the offshore industry. On medium term container throughput at the location in Sassnitz/Mukran shall also be further developed. Sea Terminal Sassnitz GmbH & Co. KG dispatched the first 40 ft container from its facility to Finland in the mid of March 2009.

Opened in 2005, the multi purpose-terminal is designed for manipulation of general cargo, bulk cargo and containers. Sea Terminal Sassnitz GmbH & Co. KG is using Mukran as a hub for the throughput of goods from and to Russia, the Baltic States and the CIS. The shares of the company are held by the Hamburger Buss Group (90 per cent), and by Fährhafen Sassnitz GmbH (10 per cent).
