Danube Austria: Less lockings, more transhipment volume in the ports

Water-to-land throughput in Austrian Danube ports grew by 15.8 per cent in 2012
 
In the reporting year 2012 total water-to-land throughput volume in Austrian ports and landing stages along the Danube river grew by 15.8 per cent or 1.3 million tonnes to 9.5 million tonnes, according to Statistics Austria. Austria’s nine locks have locked a total of 85,771 cargo vessels (31,015 empty units), which means a 8.9 per cent decrease year-on-year. As to passenger ships the figure declined by 2 per cent year-on-year to 33,572 lockings.
 
In the ports of Linz water-to-land throughput amounted to 5.3 million tonnes of cargo, up 16.4 per cent. Cargo volume in the ports of Vienna rose 14.2 per cent to 1.2 million tonnes in 2012. Declines in turn were registered in the port of Krems (down 12.1 per cent to 381,517 tonnes) and in the port of Enns (down 2.3 per cent to 594,578 tonnes). All other ports and landings (including one new registered in 2012) accounted for cargo volume of about 2 million tonnes.
