Second trial for Rail Cargo Austria’s “EuropeTrain“

Pan-European project EuropeTrain shall halve rail noise of cargo traffic through ‘whisper brakes’

Also in 2012 Rail Cargo Austria supports the pan-European project about the development of ‘whisper brakes’ for rail cargo transport. On 2 September the EuropeTrain started its 5,000 kilometres journey throughout Austria, ending on 7 September. The aim of this project is to test an innovative ‘whisper brake’ – the LL-block – and make it ready for series production. This brake block has the potential to halve rail noise of cargo traffic as opposed to currently used brake blocks made from grey iron. Under the auspices of the International Union of Railways (UIC) the EuropeTrain was launched in December 2010, travelling throughout Europe. The project has now reached its crucial final stage.

The EuropeTrain is composed of about 30 cargo wagons of different types, most of them equipped with state-of-the-art brake blocks. Thus a direct comparison regarding the noise level can be made. The so-called LL-blocks can halve rail noise through smooth wheel treads. “We want to reduce the noise of rail transport at its source and substantially relieve the population. The EuropeTrain provides a pan-European solution and promotes joint action throughout Europe“, explains ÖBB’s CEO Franz Seiser. Notwithstanding, the RCA Group will exclusively put cargo trains with silent brake systems into their service.

The EuropeTrain does not only support the test of innovative braking systems with the aim of sustainably reducing rail noise, but promotes also border-crossing cooperation in rail cargo traffic. “The RCA Group counts on border-crossing rail cargo transport, which is why we are supporting this European project“, says Georg Kasperkovitz, CEO RCA.
