Slight uptrend at Port of Rotterdam

Port of Rotterdam expects 10 per cent less cargo throughput in 2009
 

Managers at Port of Rotterdam see signs for a stabilisation in cargo throughput. In July things have begun to turn. A slightly positive development is registered for the total year, and a 10 per cent decline on last year is expected for cargo throughput in 2009. This was announced by Hans Smits, CEO Port of Rotterdam Authority, last week.

In the period form January to September the volumes handled at Port of Rotterdam amounted to 283 million tons, which is 11.9 per cent below last year’s level. Iron and scrape were particularly hit (minus 56%), followed by general cargo (minus 23%), agribulk (minus 18%) and coal with minus 17 per cent. In roll on/roll off transport volumes dropped by 13 per cent. Container business showed a reduced tonnage – minus 12 per cent to 73 million tons – and in terms of units: minus 13 per cent 7.2 million TEU.
