Stable container volumes at Eurogate terminals

Eurogate defended their position as market leader and largest container terminal operator at Germany’s North Sea ports

Despite the difficult operating environment the Eurogate group’s container terminals defended their market position. In 2012, the Europe-wide operating group handled 13.3 million TEU, which is about the previous year’s level. At just short of 8 million standard containers handled, Eurogate remains market leader and the largest container terminal operator at Germany’s North Sea ports.

In 2012 Bremerhaven handled a total of 6.1 million TEU, 3.3 per cent up on the previous year. According to the enterprise the difficult economic situation of the shipping lines has particularly affected volume development at the Eurogate Container Terminal Hamburg, resulting in a 12 per cent decline in volumes to 1.8 million TEU handled at the Hamburg location, compared to the previous year.

While Eurogate’s overall container handling volumes in Germany declined in 2012 by 0.3 per cent from about 7.93 million to 7.95 million TEU, the development of the terminal group was beyond expectations in Italy, recording a volume increase of 7.3 per cent. This result can be attributed in particular to the development at the MCT Medcenter Container Terminal in Gioia Tauro in Calabria. As a result of new business with MSC Line, the terminal posted growth of 18.1 per cent year-on-year to 2.7 million TEU.
