via donau: improved service on shallow sections information

New system for the graphic representation of current shallow water sections on the Austrian Danube on the via donau website

via donau – Österreichische Wasserstraßen GmbH  has renewed one of its core services: the representation of the current shallow water sections of the Austrian Danube. This service has been adapted and will be redesigned shortly and released on the via donau website www.via-donau.org.

Based on monthly survey recordings and on the new modeling method, the shallow sections will be displayed more clearly on the updated map. The main change is the extensive representation of the soundings which shall give the user a quicker overview of the shallow sections. The fairway depths are separated with a contour line, divided into sections of "more" and "less" than 2.5 meters (based on equivalent low water level 2010 – RNW 2010) and visualized in red or blue, respectively. The use of different colours improves readability of the depth information.

Additionally, values less than 2 meters are highlighted in red and are displayed in bold letters. "The request for user-friendly and fast readability of GIS maps could be achieved by the improvement of the cartographic design and the maintenance of hydrographic quality," says Yakup Cevik, a member of the hydrography team at via donau.
