Stern & Hafferl drives RCA cargo trains in Salzkammergut

Rail Cargo Austria and Stern & Hafferl to cooperate on transportation of limestone for the cement works Hatschek

The rail transportations for the cement company Zementwerk Hatschek GmbH in the Austrian Salzkammergut-region are handled with a new scheme. Since 9 December the Stern & Hafferl company drives the cargo trains of Rail Cargo Austria AG using the currently lowest-emission diesel locomotive in Europe Eurorunner 20, which was recently put into operation. The transport enterprise based in Gmunden, Upper Austria, also assumes wagon load transport in from Attnang-Puchheim, Upper Austria, via Gmunden to Bad Aussee, Styria. Exhaust gas and noise emissions of the diesel locomotive are reduced to a minimum.

The use of a tractive unit with combustion engine the rotation can be carried out more efficient, as unnecessary shunting operations with the feeder railway in Ebensee, and hence the arrangement of the wagons can be avoided. The cooperative of Rail Cargo Austria AG and Stern & Hafferl allows keeping limestone transport on the rail on the long term, and avoiding additional cargo transport on the roads in Salzkammergut in a sustainable manner.

Rail Cargo Austria and Zementwerk Hatschek GmbH have been partners for several years in Salzkammergut. Sine mining works started in 1910 limestone has been transported environmentally friendly on the railway. Today about 400,000 tonnes are transported on the railway per year. “As the Zementwerk Hatschek GmbH showed interest in involving a regional partner – Stern & Hafferl – to handle the cargo transport on the Salzkammergut-railway, a new 5-years agreement could be secured until 2017, and hence the supply on the environmentally friendly railway“, says Arnold Schiefer, CEO Rail Cargo Austria AG.
