Port of Hamburg: Container transport with departure and destination points in Austria soared up almost 20 per cent in 2010

Austria’s sea freight market brought considerable growth to the Port of Hamburg in the year 2010. The number of handled container traffic consignments with points of departure and origin in Austria rose around 20 per cent compared to the previous year, as Alexander Till, manager of the Viennese location of Hafen Hamburg Marketing e.V. (HHM), announced in a speech for the Österreichische Verkehrswissenschaftliche Gesellschaft (Austrian Society of Transport Science ).

According to Till in 2010 around 260.000 TEU with departure and origin points in Austria passed the facilities of Hamburg’s warehousing and throughput enterprises. Importations and exportations were about the same. Pre and on-carriage in hinterland traffic was effected by rail in 95 per cent of the cases.

In the year 2011 Port of Hamburg expects more than 300,000 TEU Austrian container consignments. “The shift of the goods flows of a major forwarding company from Rotterdam to Hamburg brought us about 50,000 TEU of additional substrate. This should increase the market share of Port of Hamburg in Austria from 49 per cent in the year 2010 to about 60 per cent“, Till explains.
