UPS drivers deploy new high-tech mobile devices

UPS equips its drivers in Austria with handheld computers using Gobi radio technology until the end of 2012

UPS announced in a press release that it has begun to equip its drivers around the world with a new-generation handheld computer. According to the logistics enterprise the devices allow for cost-effective communication without interruptions. Moreover the computer is the first in the industry to leverage what is known as Gobi radio technology. This solutions permits instant switching of cellular carriers if one carrier’s signal is lost.

The new computer, known as the fifth-generation Delivery Information Acquisition Device or DIAD V, is approximately half the size and weight of the DIAD IV; is more durable, and holds more data. In addition the DIAD V has a clearer and larger display, a multi-barcode scanner and a faster WLAN data transmission (65 Mbit/s) for huge downloads such as training videos.

UPS has been deploying the DIAD V in the USA since last September. In Europe the device is about to be introduced in Germany and Great Britain and shall be part of the equipment in more countries before the end of next year. In Germany, Austria and Switzerland the introduction is planned to be completed by the end of 2012. After completion of the introduction in 2013 about 100,000 devices will be in use.
