VCÖ mobility prize Salzburg for Schweighofer-Fiber and partner

Shift of cargo transport from road to rail brings VCÖ mobility prize Salzburg to Schweighofer-Fiber and partners like DB Schenker

Earlier this week Regional Minister Hans Mayr, VCÖ and ÖBB Postbus awarded the VCÖ mobility prize Salzburg on "Mobility and Transport 2025 +" to the Hallein-based pulp producer Schweighofer Fiber. The company has shifted transport from road to rail in a forward-looking logistics approach. Partners of the project include DB Schenker, Salzburger Lokalbahnen and Eurogate.

Schweighofer Fiber GmbH is part of the Austrian family company Schweighofer Holzindustrie. Their core business is sustainable use of the raw material wood, which is used for production of high quality pulp and bioenergy. Per year 135,000 tonnes of viscose fibers are loaded directly at the production plant in Hallein to railway.

When loading with fixed schedules Schweighofer Fiber uses forklifts with electric drive. Two to three weekly block trains leave the plant and thus avoid 5,400 truck trips per year. VCÖ points out the impressive balance sheet: approximately 4,200 tonnes of CO2, 36 tonnes of harmful nitrogen oxides and about 580,000 kilogrammes of particulate matter particles are avoided per year.
