Vintage Bentleys speed off to South Africa

15 seventy-year-old cars shipped from the UK for the 6th Vintage Bentley Tour of South Africa

(Tilbury, 05, October 2007)  Schenker Limited, the UK arm of the global integrated logistics provider, has shipped fifteen highly prized vintage Bentleys to Durban for the 6th Vintage Bentley Tour of South Africa.

Each car is worth many thousands of pounds and many have been lovingly restored over the years. All were accompanied by their owner/drivers who assisted in loading them into individual 20′ containers at the port of Tilbury.  The cars range from 3 and 4.5 litre machines right through to 6.5 and 8 litre vehicles with the larger cars being able to perform at in excess of 100 mph despite having been built between 1922 and 1931.  Even the 3 litre cars can cruise at a top speed of 70 mph.
„These are very precious machines and we have been working on the project since February,“ states Mark Woolnough, Schenker’s UK Ocean Feight Commercial Manager.  „We had to load each of the cars separately and once the rally is complete we will also be handling the return – some back to the UK and some onwards to New Zealand“.

While in South Africa, the cars will cover some 4500 kms over three and a half weeks and will visit numerous tourist centres including the Drakensberg Mountains, Shamwari Game Reserve, Knysna, Oudtshoorn, Montagu, Hermanus and Cape Town. Says John White, Chairman of the Vintage Bentley Driver’s Club of South Africa: „These old Bentleys are a lot more fun than modern cars and many in this tour have been in the hands of their current owners for several years.  We’re having two stops in most places to allow for both sightseeing and running repairs to the cars.  Sometimes you have to get very hands dirty and greasy to fix them!  We’re really very grateful to everyone at Schenker for helping us with the shipping“.
