Wiener Hafen Group reports stable results in 2008

Wiener Hafen achieved growth in container throughput in 2008

The Wiener Hafen recorded a stable development of freight traffic in the year 2008. With a total volume of 12 million tons passing the whole Wiener Hafen goods transport centre the reference figure of the previous year was reached once again. About 5.5 million tons were handled by the companies of the Wiener Hafen Group, which equals the figure of 2007. “In the fourth quarter we felt the impact of the economic crisis”, Managing Director Walter Edinger mentioned in an interview with the Österreichische Verkehrszeitung (Austrian Transport Magazine).

Due to a 10%-decline in volumes of mineral oil products to 1.5 million tons the water traffic of the Wiener Hafen Group showed a decline in 2008. However, these losses have been compensated by slight increases in land throughput. The volume handled at the intermodal terminals of the WienCont amounted to 335,000 TEU which is 3 per cent above the figure of the year 2007.
