Wincanton ships Myllykoski tree barks to Linz

Finish paper group Myllykoski nimmt Wincanton stärker in die Pflicht

The Finish paper producer Myllykoski enhanced the cooperation with the Wincanton Group. In addition to transport and storage of cellulose, kaolin and coal the logistics service provider now also forwards the residual product tree bark on river vessels to a bio-combustion facility in Linz, Austria.

At the new MD Papier plant in Plattling (Germany) large volumes of spruce wood from the local area are processed. In order to dispose in an environmentally friendly way of the bark that arises from paper production, Myllykoski decided in spring to have the residual product forwarded by Wincanton with inland vessels on the Danube to a bio combustion facility in Linz. The plant uses the renewable raw material to produce CO2-neutral local heat.

Wincanton supported the enterprise in searching for an alternative way of transportation. After the first test deliveries were accomplished both partners agreed upon forwarding a volume of nearly 30,000 tons of bark mulch from Plattling this year. The material is then forwarded by truck to Deggendorf and loaded to an inland vessel in the local harbour for the transportation to Linz. Next year the company aims at forwarding 60,000 tons and passing on the bark-utilisation concept to other paper plants as well.

Myllykoski is one of the world’s leading producers of printing paper; it operates mills in Finland, Germany and North America. For 40 years Wincanton has been controlling cellulose procurement logistics from the ARA ports to the MD Albbruck works, located at the southern edge of the Black Forest. Also the storage of cellulose in Weil am Rhein counts among the tasks of the logistics service provider. Supply from the warehouse in Weil is carried out around the clock by shuttle truck. Moreover Wincanton pulls the strings for coal transportations on behalf of Myllykoski and for diverse suppliers.
