Austria’s feeder railways are (still) a trend

Feeder railways contributed around 60 per cent to cargo traffic in 2010on the railway in Austria

 

The number of feeder railways in Austria is slightly declining. Last year there were 840 branch lines, 782 of them served within ÖBB’s network. In the years 2008 and 2009, 916 and 863 facilities were operated. These figures were announced at the 64. general meeting of the association for feeder railway operators (Verband für Anschlussbahnunternehmen -VABU). “About 60 per cent of the cargo traffic on the railway has its origin on a branch line“,VABU’s president Ing. Markus Schinko emphasised in his speech.

According to DI Tobias Vanicek of Schienen-Control Österreichische Gesellschaft für Schienenmarktregulierung, the feeder railways delivered 1.28 million wagons last year. 1.13 million thereof to the network of ÖBB. About 25 feeder railways handle half of the total volume. Eight operators handled more than 33,000 wagons. And 108 feeder railways handled less than 100 wagons last year.
